For my project " Five Blind Women“ I worked with young blind women from the Federal School for the Blind in Vienna and present
them in an unusual context: The Glamour of Fashion. The basis for my deliberations was not the problem of their handicap as such.
My aim is to make the sensual dimensions inherent in fashion as well as our perception of them beyond the merely visual aspect
perceptible in pictures (photography). It is not the blindness/ disability of my models which is in the foreground, but precisely
the exceptional quality of their perception.
This was virgin ground for me, as I had never previously had any contact with blind people. However, I discovered that the girls were
extremely interested not only in fashion, but also in photography as a medium, and I sensed great human strength here. This made for
intensive cooperation, extremely sensitive in nature and lasting several weeks, during which I learned a great deal.
I soon realised that my approach, i.e., that of depicting people with a handicap not as deficient human beings, is still very unusual.
My perspective on portraying blindness in this project is a natural one: the models are not defined by their blindness. Blindness is
only one of many partial aspects of their identities and it lends a special quality of perception to the specific project.
During my work I grappled with the questions as to which socio-cultural context I am actually operating in when taking fashion
photographs with blind women, how deficiency and blindness are defined, how compatible blindness and the medium of photography
are and what work - if any - has already been carried out on this subject. The insights which I gained when pursuing this theme
in depth have been channelled into my practical work.
People who can see, who look at the world from their visually centred standpoint, actually see much less than they think. Their
world is only one of many worlds. Yet beyond the sphere of the all too smooth, artificially perfected ideals of beauty, another,
new aesthetic of innate vulnerability comes into play, on the basis of a different, wider image of the body and human nature.
A new quality of sensuality, over and beyond the purely visual aspect.
Für mein Diplomprojekt „Five Blind Women“ habe ich mit jungen blinden Frauen vom Bundes- Blindenerziehungsinstitut Wien gearbeitet
und zeige sie in einem ungewöhnlichen Kontext: dem Glamour of Fashion. Ausgangspunkt meiner Überlegungen war nicht die Problematik
von Behinderung. Ich will die sinnlichen Dimensionen von Mode und deren Wahrnehmung jenseits des Sichtbaren im Bild spürbar machen.
Nicht die Blindheit/Behinderung meiner Modelle steht im Vordergrund, sondern gerade die besondere Qualität ihrer Wahrnehmung.
Ich begab mich auf unbekanntes Terrain, da ich vorher noch nie mit blinden Menschen in Kontakt gekommen war. Bei den Mädchen fand
ich jedoch großes Interesse vor: nicht nur für Mode, sondern auch für das Medium Fotografie, und sehr viel menschliche Kraft.
So kam es zu einer mehrwöchigen, intensiven, auch sehr sensiblen Zusammenarbeit, bei der ich viel gelernt habe.
Bald stellte ich fest, dass meine Herangehensweise, Menschen mit einer Behinderung nicht als defizitäre Wesen darzustellen, noch sehr
ungewöhnlich ist. Der Zugang zur Darstellung von Blindheit in diesem Projekt ist ein selbstverständlicher Zugang: Die Modelle werden
nicht über ihre Blindheit definiert. Die Blindheit ist nur ein Aspekt unter anderen in ihrer Identität und stellt eine besondere Qualität der
Wahrnehmung dar, die sie in das konkrete Projekt einbringen.
Während der Arbeit setzte ich mich mit der Frage auseinander, in welchem soziokulturellen Kontext ich mich bewege, wenn ich Mode an
blinden Frauen fotografiere, wie Behinderung und Blindheit definiert wird, wie Blindheit und das Medium Fotografie zusammengehen
und ob es schon Arbeiten in diese Richtung gibt. Die Einsichten, die ich bei der Vertiefung in das Thema gewonnen habe, sind in die praktische Arbeit eingeflossen.
Die Sehenden, die die Welt von ihrem visuzentristischen Standpunkt aus betrachten, sehen tatsächlich viel weniger, als sie denken. Ihre Welt ist nur eine von vielen Welten.
Doch jenseits allzu glatter, künstlich perfektionierter Schönheitsideale kommt auf der Basis eines anderen, breiter angelegten Körper- und Menschenbildes eine neue Ästhetik der Verletzbarkeit ins Spiel. Eine neue Qualität der Sinnlichkeit, auch jenseits des Sichtbaren.
